RUSSELL HILL Rogers THEATER

In tribute to Russell Hill Rogers, a local champion of both the arts and LGBTQ rights in San Antonio, the theater bearing his name stands as a symbol to his legacy. With 349 seats and a commanding proscenium stage, it embodies his passion for the performing arts and his unwavering commitment to his community.

Over four decades, Rogers dedicated himself to nurturing San Antonio’s cultural landscape. He served on the boards of esteemed institutions like the San Antonio Symphony Society, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the McNay Art Museum. Yet, his influence transcended boardrooms; he graced the stage of the San Pedro Playhouse, led the San Antonio Little Theatre, and championed visual arts as a member and former president of the Texas Watercolor Society.

Formally known as “Cellar Theatre,” Classic Theatre has recently joined San Pedro Playhouse to bring community, culture, and the arts to life in San Antonio.

San Pedro Springs Park

San Pedro Springs Park, San Antonio’s oldest park, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it was designated for public use by the Spanish government. Its origins trace back over 12,000 years, serving as a gathering place around its springs and creek. Named by Fathers Antonio de San Buenaventura de Olivares and Isidro Felix de Espinosa in 1709, the springs played a vital role in the area’s development, evolving from Spanish camps to the heart of San Antonio’s earliest settlement. Despite facing challenges over the years, dedicated individuals like John Jacob Duerler and Frederick Kerbel worked to enhance and preserve the park. Renovations in the late 19th century, led by figures like Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert, adapted the park to modern recreational needs, adding amenities such as a swimming pool and the San Pedro Playhouse. Recognized for its cultural significance, the Texas Recreation and Parks Society designated San Pedro Springs Park as a Lone Star Legacy Park in 2012. As a cherished venue for our Shakespeare in the Park performances, this historic park provides a captivating stage for both visitors and artists to immerse themselves in the arts within Earth’s natural beauty.
